Atorvastatin is usually prescribed to help reduce the amount of cholesterol and specific fatty substances in the blood. Atorvastatin, used along with low-fat, low-cholesterol diet, can help lower the blood level of cholesterol and other fats, thereby helping to reduce the risk of chest pain (angina), heart disease, heart attacks and/or stroke. Atorvastatin is not a cure for high cholesterol, heart failure or heart disease. Atorvastatin is designed to reduce the accumulation of cholesterol and fats along the artery walls, a process known as atherosclerosis that causes a decrease in blood flow. Allowing the blood to flow more freely reduces stress on the heart and enables it to pump oxygenated blood more efficiently and effectively to the heart, brain and other parts of the body
