Atorvastatin is usually prescribed to help reduce the amount of cholesterol and specific fatty substances in the blood. Atorvastatin, used along with low-fat, low-cholesterol diet, can help lower the blood level of cholesterol and other fats, thereby helping to reduce the risk of chest pain (angina), heart disease, heart attacks and/or stroke. Atorvastatin is not a cure for high cholesterol, heart failure or heart disease. Atorvastatin is designed to reduce the accumulation of cholesterol and fats along the artery walls, a process known as atherosclerosis that causes a decrease in blood flow.
